The Quitters are a guitar duo, consisting of a right-side up finger picker and an upside down flat picker. More importantly they were two of the three founding members of the virtuoso string band, The Waybacks, and one was the long-time lead guitarist and co-founder of the Americana powerhouse, Houston Jones. Now they play together, on their own, hence the name, "The Quitters". They deliver a mostly acoustic celebration of flatpick and fingerstyle mastery, plus vocals, spiced with humor and serendipity.

Stevie Coyle (late of the whiz-bang string band The Waybacks) is one lucky bum. His dad ran a radio station in southern California and brought home all the promo LPs that didn't fit the Spanish-language format. The Ventures' Guitar Freakout, The 50 Guitars of Tommy Garrett and Alvin And The Chipmunks Play The Beatles' Hits all came home on a single fateful day. It didn't hurt, either, that string-meister David Lindley played in a bluegrass band that rehearsed right next door and gave Stevie his very first lessons, or that his dear Granny was a pianist in the heyday of vaudeville and that his sainted mother was a whiz in mandolin orchestras during the 1930s.

Glenn Houston (nee Pomianek) has been voted Best Guitarist by the Northern California Bluegrass Society, is a past judge of the National Flatpicking Guitar Championship Competition in Winfield, Kansas, and was the founding lead guitarist of the Waybacks. Over the years, Glenn has shared billing with such luminaries as Emmylou Harris, Merle Haggard, the Tubes, the David Grisman Quintet, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Bela Fleck, Tim O’Brien, Hank Williams Jr., Steve Earle, John Hartford, Earl Scruggs, Doc and Merle Watson, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Delbert McClinton. Originally from New Jersey, Glenn’s guitarist influences range from Albert King and Michael Bloomfield to Doc Watson and James Burton. These influences show in his well-balanced mastery of both acoustic and electric guitar.

What the People Say

Stevie Coyle:

“Our recent House Concert with the incomparable Stevie Coyle ranks among the best shows we’ve had. Stevie’s great song writing and amazing guitar playing were complemented by his humor, charm and exceptional rapport with the audience. He’s a dynamite performer and a true professional who left everyone raving about the show. It was truly a wonderful evening and we can’t wait to bring him back.”

—Russ & Julie, Oak Park, CA

“I recently had the great pleasure of hosting a house concert where Stevie Coyle performed for us. His finger-picking and singing was fabulous, as were the songs he played, mostly originals with some well-chosen covers. On top of being a top-rate guitarist and singer, he is also an outstanding entertainer. He brings a lot of humor to his show, through funny songs, stories, and general chatter with the audience. He really connected with our group, and everyone had a wonderful time. I highly recommend you host his show. You, and everyone there, will be very glad you did.”

—Bo Russell, Casa Bowl House Concerts, Orlando, FL

Glenn "Houston" Pomianek:

"The most amazing guitar player I've seen.  Wonderful lead guitar work.  An awesome player... great flat-picking... incredible."

Dave Stafford, KKUP-FM

"(With) long, liquid licks...there is nothing pretentious in Pomianek's manner -- his playing just seems to energize the rhythms and instigate a vollying conversation throughout the band."

—Cheryl Koehler, The Castro Valley Forum
